L I R A: advanced technology for air purity

La2O3-modified YSZ coatings: High-temperature stability and improved thermal barrier properties.
SURF
Lab tests: where the finish starts (Part 1).
Part I of a two part series describes four tests conducted on wet paint: viscosity, wet-film thickness, solids content and conductivity as well as the dry-film thickness test.
Lab tests: where the finish starts (Part II).
This second part of a series on laboratory testing of coatings covers adhesion, flexibility, hardness, gloss, chemical and stain resistance and accelerated weathering techniques.
Labelled atom method of studying the formation of conversion coatings on aluminium surfaces
Compn. of conversion coatings formed on Al in various chromating soln. is studied by means of *32P, *59Fe, *51Cr and *60Co isotopes.
Labelling of triglycidyl isocyanurate: is it a threat or an opportunity ?
European Union has decided that labelling of powder coatings containing triglycidyl isocyanurate requires toxic symbol, with effect from May 1998. Alternative systems are discussed, incl. 2 specified proprietary cross-linking agents, aliphatic oxirane-based proprietary cross-linker, and polyurethanes.
Laboratory and field corrosion behaviour of coatings for turbine blades
SURF Reports comparative evaluation of 3 commercial coatings for turbine blades; (i) low and high activity pack cementation aluminide; and (ii) slurry deposited silicon modified aluminide. For laboratory corrosion test, bare substrate (Udimet 520) and coated samples were subjected to 2 salt baths, 25% NaCl-75% Na sulphate and 100% Na sulphate at 750°C in inert atmos (Ar) and gas mixture of SO3-SO2-O2. For rainbow test, 9 coated blades were mounted in gas turbine for 10 000 h. For the NaCl- Na sulphate bath, damage mode of bare sample was Type I hot corrosion, while for 100% Na sulphate bath damage was Type II;independent of test atmos. Coated samples showed incipient corrosion for same tests. Coatings were rated (from worst to best) as: Al-Pt, Al, Al-Si. Rainbow test showed same tendency but corrosion damage was less intensive.
Laboratory and field testing of zinc rich primers - VOC compliant materials. Electrochemical test methods - utilizing results to predict performance
Solvent based inorganic zinc rich primers have performed well exposed to salt air, e.g., at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. Laboratory and field testing were performed on new low VOC inorg. Zn rich primers, (high solids solvent-based and water-based), applied to mild steel. New materials are important due to stricter environmental regulations. Electrochemical laboratory test results, from both DC and AC methods, will be compared to preliminary results of exposure at beach corrosion test site along Atlantic Ocean at KSC.

Laboratory evaluation of automotive conversion coatings
Major cyclic laboratory tests used by car manufacturers were compared with standard ASTM and Proving Grounds cycle test. 2 cyclic accelerated tests simulated in-service corrosion.
Laboratory evaluation of epoxy coatings with an adhesion promoter by impedance
The effect of t-glycidyloxpropyl-trimethoxysilane as an adhesion promoter on the corrosion behaviour of epoxy coatings pigmented with rutile, iron oxide and glass flake was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Improved performance was attributed to an increase in initial, wet and recovered adhesion between the glass flakes and the binder.
Laboratory Evaluation of Paint Durability Accelerated Weathering Tests.
Overview of artificial weathering tests & their relation to actual climatic conditions. Meteorological data only. Disc'n pp 350-354.
Laboratory evaluations of mechanical decontamination and descaling techniques

Laboratory galling tests of several commercial cobalt-free weld hardfacing alloys
